Short communication: Efficacy of a second intrauterine cephapirin infusion for the treatment of purulent vaginal discharge and endometritis in postpartum dairy cows

The objective of this study was to quantify the efficacy a second intrauterine cephapirin treatment administered 14 d after initial one on subsequent reproductive performance postpartum dairy cows affected by purulent vaginal discharge (PVD) or endometritis (ENDO). In total, 4,140 Holstein from 30 commercial herds were enrolled in randomized clinical trial. At 36 (±7) milk, examined using Metricheck device diagnose PVD. An endometrial cytology sample also collected each cow perform leukocyte esterase test for diagnosing ENDO. Diagnosis PVD and ENDO done cow-side. Cows diagnosed with assigned receive 1 2 treatments: (1) single infusion (500 mg benzathin; Metricure, Merck Animal Health, Kirkland, QC, Canada) at time examination (2) later. Subsequent culling events until 200 milk. Statistical analyses performed univariable multivariable mixed logistic regression models. PVD, increased pregnancy risk first insemination comparison that only received (28.0 vs. 38.8%). ENDO, compared (30.3 39.2%). Overall, these results demonstrate administering did improve their performance.
